The Final Fox

Way down nearly at the very Darwinian origins of this blog I began by making reference to the Joni Mitchell song "Both Sides Now", which remains high on my list of favorite songs ever. On my way to work today in the Chantilly Forest, I couldn't help spotting this most unfortunate fox by the roadside... yet another victim of our idiot need to rush to rush to rush blindly about, massacring anything that should have the temerity to cross our vindictive motorhead paths. Automobiles are for the birds... maybe it is about time all their manufacturers went bankrupt. I know that is not a kind thing to say, I know I never should, especially if your living depends in some way, shape, or form on the auto industry... but one glimpse of this broken bodied fox from both sides now this afternoon has me secretly hoping that cars will disappear one day soon. Did you ever read D.H. Lawrence's short story called "The Fox"? If not you need to remedy that literary deficiency quickly... What I wouldn't give to bring this little fellow back to life... so he could get back to running free in the woods at night. I know I've seen him or her on some nights driving home late from work... and I always slowed down to a crawl lest he do something unpredictable...

Absolutely tragic. They aren't common here at all and I had what almost seemed like a visitation one early morning while driving to work, and one crossed the country road in front of me and ran off into a field. Very special and I've thought about it many times since.

I have a book of D.H.Lawrence writings, and will check to see if the story is in there. If so, it will have been read tonight to undo the literary deficiency.

How sad! I saw an opossum the other day that was hit by a car, suffering. Animal control came and took it away. You are right, we are always rushing to another rush... There has to be a balance somewhere.

oh Owen, this is so sad.. It is quite unusual to see a fox killed along the roadside.. but strange enough I came across one about a month ago... it was a brutal scene... hardly recognizable.... I see raccoons and porcupines very often but never Foxes.. they are too quick and clever I would think..

But also interestingly enough we are inundated with foxes this year.. they are always skirting around the the fields and running up and down the driveway... we hardly leave the house without seeing one. two or even 4 or more.. ...

This fox in your photograph seems to have a slightly different coat than ours.. and no white tip on the tail... his coat seems almost groomed... slightly shorter hair maybe?
