All For Naught

Human beings and their automobiles... and the oil needed to make them move; the love affair of the 20th century. But at the end of the road, at the end of the line, at the end of a life lies a junkyard. After all the incredible efforts made to design and manufacture automobiles, and the freedom they provided to millions to move about at will, to see them finish their careers just a few short years later in a place like this, in a state like this... is just a sad reminder of "vanitas"... struggle, strive to surmount strife in life, but in the junkyard, all was for naught. This black & white photo was taken about 20 years ago in South Philadelphia.

In April 2008 I went back to the exact same spot, and nothing has changed...
