Marcel Dufresne was killed at the age of 21 in October, 1916 at a godforsaken place named Maurepas near the Somme River, between Bapaume and Peronne, to the east of Albert. The area is literally littered with graveyards, French, British, Canadian, German ; serving as reminders of the slaughter that took place along the lines that stretched from Belgium across northern France and nearly to the Swiss border. His tomb, with this plaque on it, is in a cemetery near Chantilly... the image fading, fading, nearly gone over 90 years later. In my opinion plaques like this one should be preserved in a safe, sheltered museum to protect them, and display them... lest we forget what happened to an entire generation of people like Marcel. Or have we forgotten already ?
