Magical Mystery Face . . .

Hardly the barest trace of a face left at the center of this cross photographed in a cemetery near Chantilly, France just a couple of weeks ago. . . the ravages of time. Something very sobering in the solemn, timeless gaze coming back out of this rust corroded Christ figure. Although I am far from being religious in the sense of adhering to any of the organized churches, I would not say that I am lacking in a deep spiritual sense and am always looking for signs of the miraculous magic that is happening all around us all the time. Whether Jesus Christ was more or less miraculous than any other spiritual figures throughout history, like American Indian medicine men or Mexican Indian shamans or any in the long line of Zen Budhists or Muslim prophets and so forth, you can feel his call reaching out across the centuries when contemplatling an artifact like this one . . . speaking of ancient mysteries. . . and reminding us, that it will be over before we know it, this life of ours. Nearly half a century old, and I feel like I'm just barely starting to get warmed up. . .
