Looking For A Needle . . .
What photographer has not tried a "Haystacks" shot with visions of Van Gogh in mind ? I was hoping that day back last Summer for a ray of golden sunshine to set things on fire here, but the sky remained obstinately overcast. So I took the picture anyway. . . sometimes we take what we are handed in life I suppose. . . the golden needle is often elusive. . .

It's true you don't always find the golden needle...but maybe the smell of hay was the silver lining?
This is a beautiful photograph! I wonder if they still make the vertical haystacks, though, that Van Gogh was so fond of painting. Probably not.
o it's very familiar again! It's like my childhood and holiday in the village. Is it really France?

Actually the overcast sky gives an incredible feeling of depth, space and distance... which really works for me.
I love this! When I lived in Nevada as a kid/young adult the ranchers all made big square blocks of hay. The same shape was used here in Oregon when I moved here and for years afterward. The first round hay bales I ever saw were outside Calgary, Canada, and I was absolutely enchanted. I had terrible light as it was nearly evening but I stopped the car to get a shot.....nothing as good as this one.
Now, in Oregon, I see a mixture of the square and round bales. The round bales are so much more picturesque.
a-hem... not to be a pain in the arse.. but not only did the sun not shine for you, but you actually photographed straw. Not hay.... It's a nice non-predictable hay bale picture though:-D
Not a sight I can picture coming from France - it's something I see here all the time. I hope the hay inside the rolls stayed dry when those clouds let loose.

I love this photo Owen, it reminds me of home. Home to me is farmland near the ocean...I've seen this scene many times on my vacations to Prince Edward Island, my future home. I like the sky that way actually!
