Stars and Stripes . . .

Sometimes in the animated life of a blog, it becomes necessary, for no particularly good reason, to insert a photograph of a zebra. Or even of two zebras. You may understandably wonder . . . "Has he lost his marbles?" "Has he been drinking?" "Has he gone clear around the bend?" But nevertheless, the implacable logic of blogging required a zebra in this blog at this exact point in time. These are not, by the way, the first zebras to appear in these pages, and probably not the last. A total of no less than 12 previous posts have dealt with the philosophically challenging topic of zebras. How could such a divinely decorated ass's uncle exist in the first place ? Now that is a stumper . . .

of course they have to appear - perfection for black and white photography - and there is also a wonderful symmetry about this shot...right??

Have you lost your marbles? ;)

Owen, you made an excellent point that I had never considered before.

Why "zebra"... zeee brah...zebra?

The Great Stripped Ass and the Lesser Stripped Ass makes a lot more sense.

As the amount of colour does speak, it comes to the question, whether to be or not - for sure, the answer has to be a YES, thankful that they just are, a beauty of life.

Zebras are great. I don't think of zebras often enough. Seeing these zebras on your post was exactly what I needed at this point in time. I feel so much better now. There they are in black and white in black and white. Not afraid to show their stripes. Yes, this blog post was black and white and read all over, with great pleasure.

I laugh now but I bet before I'm done I'll post a few zebras.

Sometimes you just need a zebra. I fully believe in this. Love the black and white. I've always thought they were quite majestic creatures.

For a moment I thought you had cloned the zebra's image to appear again in the photo, but there are many differences. I love the illusion of repetition, and the light branches against the medium ground, with the dark branches against the while sky repeating suggestions of the contrasting stripes. Really cool image! Glad they were a necessary interjection at this point.
Double the pleasure to see. :-)

Surrealistic Owen =)=)=)

Funny you should mention zebras....only yesterday I vented on Twitter about my local zebra crossing! Great stripes mind.

Whether you have been drinking, or are just mad, we all need a little bit of zebra magic in our lives every now and again.
Thanks for the elixir.

Your opening sentence is like something from Douglas Adams.

Aren't zebras magnificent! (I know a lot of people frown upon exclamation marks these days but I still like them)

No justification needed - gorgeous photographs!

A charming post you've conjured up...These zebras are the cat's pajamas, and they're wearing them, too;)

Zebra asses? I've had some strange things with my morning coffee..... but OK, I'll ponder these for a while.

The tails look like French braids...pretty. Well, that is just too weird. I'm going for more coffee......:)

Those are lovely creatures, what a wonderful photo Owen! I understand your logic! LOL

I'm down with the zebras, absolutely. I find them fascinating. I understand the camouflage function of the stripes, but really -- they do seem a bit like Nature showing off, don't they?

Personally I really like zebras. One time I contracted an artist friend to paint life size zebras on my living room wall!

That's a completely understandable urge to do zebras. I was just feeling the need myself.

And now that I look at them again, they remind of the wallpaper I had in my bedroom, 'round about 1969.

Hey Everybody .... can't even tell you all how much I smiled and guffawed and chuckled and whatnot while reading all your funny comments here... Evidently the subject of zebras resonates nicely with more than a few of you... Well, I shall just have to put on the zebra carnaval mask tonight and go do a zebra dance in the moonlight...

Thinking warm thoughts back at all of you... promise to come visit me once they lock me up in the zebra ward ?

Zebras seem to be the perfect subjects for your style of photography, Owen, especially when you're shooting in black & white. They're just strolling about, enjoying their stress-free day, those zebras. You have to envy them! Love your photo, Owen! :-)

Oh PULEEZ get some photos of you doing your moonlight zebra dance!

Owen said...

Ah y'all are too much fun...

Just for info, there is no way I could have photoshopped this photo to clone the second zebra, can you imagine the time it would take to get the stripes right ??? Nope, this is all natural...

Lynne, if it happens, there'll be photos... stay tuned...
