It was a common practice years ago to place an oval ceramic piece on tombstones in France which bore a photo of the beloved deceased. I'm not sure by what process the photos were printed or transferred to the ceramic surface, but it was not the most permanent of methods. I have often come across badly decayed images in various states of graphic decomposition. This one was one of the farthest along I've ever found, the image being practically impossible to decipher, just the faintest trace of eyes, lips, hair... a ghost of its former self...
