The cemetery in question where you could see this work, in the stone, were you so inclined is in le Touquet-Paris-Plage, which is roughly a two hour drive north of Paris, past Amiens, on the coast south of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

ReplyDeleteOh Wow! On the first shot they look like they are floating or levitating. Hovering between this world and the next. And the second, such a combination of natural and unnatural. I can see why you were so taken. Amazing shots Owen. I've never seen anything like it myself.

ReplyDeleteIt's quite beautiful and touching. Can't quite make out the dates, but looks like he died well before her. But now they are together again. I was reminded of the grave-site of Vincent and Theo in a cemetery in Auvers-sur-Oise. You may have seen it, they were buried side by side, and the ground above them is a single blanket of ivy. Also, on the way to the site, one passes a field of sunflowers. It was the same field upon which Vincent based several paintings. Thanks for posting these photos.

ReplyDeleteThanks to one and all here, merci bcp ! It really is an unusual sculpture to find in a public cemetery like this. Just about the only place I've seen anything remotely like it was in the Basilica at Saint Denis, just north of Paris, where quite a number of French royalty are interred. There are several sculptures in there depicting various royals in their eternal rest.

Mythopolis, he died in 1973, she passed on in 1994, 21 years later... And yes, I have been to Auvers sur Oise and visited the graveyard where Vincent and Theo Van Gogh are buried... a beautiful place...
